My name is Pieter Genee (NL, 1994). I am a London/Amsterdam-based director and cinematographer with experience working across Europe as well as in extreme conditions across the globe.

I just finished my MA in documentary directing at the National Film and Television School. Recently, I shot and directed (branded) documentaries in regions across South Africa, Scotland and the Netherlands.

My first short film, ‘Sweet Life’, about a young girl with diabetes, got nominated in the Short Doc competition at the Oscar qualifying ‘In the Palace’. My second short, ‘In love and sorrow. was nominated for best short at the Bafta Qualifying ‘Norwich Film Festival’ and tells a post-industrial love story in times of a changing climate.

My most recent film, ‘Khayelitsha, about an artist collective in a South African township, won a One World Media Award, was nominated in the Global Graduate Showcase and is nominated for a student Academy Award (Oscars).

I am very interested in the aesthetics of mood and finding stories where the place, person, and past perfectly coalesce. I firmly believe in careful considerations regarding representation in front of and behind the camera.

Besides non-fiction, I have a strong foundation in commercial work and like to work with companies that try to better the world one small step at a time.

Before the NFTS, I successfully graduated from the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht with a major in Communication and Media Design (Cum Laude) and completed a master-level course in journalism (high-risk environments) with a GPA of 4.0.

And now a word from our sponsors

The work of Pieter is immediately identifiable in it’s ability to tell a narrative that is at once evocative, gripping, and uncommonly romantic.
Composed — but never contrived, Pieter draws upon a deep technical understanding of the craft as well as a clean aesthetic influenced by his love for contemporary art.
